Best 3 Memorable Movie Endings I Love

What makes a Movie's Ending Memorable?
For some people depending on their age and of course the genre of the movie...the basic ending or an answer at the end will suffice. Such as...do the lovers end up together? Do they escape the villain? Do they all die in the end? Do they find a cure and live happily ever after? The list can unquestionably go on.
As an audience in general, we each carry our own distinct set of needs or expectations as to what we may find memorable in a Movie...
However, It is hard to dispute that regardless of preferences or genre of the movie that:
Outstanding profound, moving storytelling;combined with substance, clever wit, strong or captivating actors, impeccable and most thought out soundtrack(the right music is essential for depicting or expressing tone), unique perspective or thought, not to mention excellent cinematography/photography makes the whole experience highly enjoyable and hopefully--- Memorable.
Last and certainly not least when a movie possesses originality in its writing, minute details relevant to the story...to see the story unwind seamlessly to its ending....it is an Art form like no other--priceless.
Films and the experience of moving watching... are by far one of my greater passions in life that I enjoy immensely.
The most Memorable 3 Movie Endings that I happen to LOVE in no particular order are:
The Shawshank Redemption-1994
Director: Frank Darabont
Genre: Drama, Rated R
Main Actors: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman
Synopsis: Based on the Stephen King novel, this movie is set in a depressing, austere prison in the 1940's. Tim Robbins plays Andy a prominent banker whom is wrongfully framed and accused of the double murder of his wife and her lover. While in this prison he befriends a long serving inmate Morgan Freeman known as Red. They form an strong friendship based on their mutual admiration's of one another for being courageous, intelligent, hopeful and integral.
Why the ending is Memorable?
After years in prison and countless personal persecutions, hardships, trials and tribulations...finally these loyal friends are sentimentally reunited. As the ending comes to its fruition we unmistakably become even more aware of just how much all of their conversations, and moments they shared in that unforgiving prison --all of it truly mattered. As a recently released convict Morgan Freeman as Red narrates how lost he feels fearful in the world as a newly freed man. His fear or inability to adapt almost gets him to the point of breaking parole or worse yet committing suicide. This was the fate unfortunately of his former inmate friend(Brooks)who had been paroled some time before Red. By mere coincidence Brooks had committed suicide in the same bleak little room where Red presently lives in. It's heart wrenching to witness Red humbly struggle in the outside world. Red decides however, to keep the promise he had made years ago to Andy to seek him out once he was released from prison. This in turn sparks hope within him for much needed new direction. All these scenes are occuring through the wonderfully heart tugging music of Thomas Newman.
As Red heads to Buxton to find this secretly hidden letter from Andy, we can't help but feel great anticipation as to what lies ahead right along with Red. When Red finds the letter and begins to read it, we then have the added emotional effect of Andy's heartwarming, loyal, honest tonality via narration to his beloved friend Red. In this newly found precious letter Andy gives Red instructions where to find him along with some money if he should ever need him. Not only is this touching letter a clear indicate of Andy's promise of a life long friendship to Red, the letter also clearly signifies the continuation of an everlasting friendship along with a new opportunity for a better life for both of them, Red especially.
Undoubtedly now Red with now has a new lease of life and cant hardly contain his joy-- and it shows. He stoically decides that he will no longer resign to being a lost soul. Red breaks his parole, redeems himself and decides to head out to Mexico to find his friend, Andy.
And so on a clear perfectly clear blue skied day, we see Red walking along the beach knowing exactly where he needs to go. The camera then turns to Andy as he is working on his boat just as he said he would years before to Red in prison. Andy smiles at Red, not really surprised but just happy to see him. Red's Joyous Open Smile is Exuberantly Touching, Inspiring- Memorable.
Camera pans out and we see both men at a distance, walking towards one another with arms wide open----Scene Fades.
Shawshank Redemption Ending
Next Memorable Movie Ending is...
The English Patient-1996
Main Actors - Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Kristin Scott Thomas, Colin Firth, Willem Dafoe
Director - Anthony Minghella
Genre-Romantic Drama Rated R
Synopsis: Based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Ondaatjes, this movie takes place during WW II. It's an extraordinary tale about a badly burned pilot, played by Ralph Fiennes, known later as Count Lazlo de Almasy. He is fortunate enough to end up in the care of a lovely young nurse named Hana played by Juliette Binoche. At first, The English Patient remains a mystery as his identity is not confirmed due to his terribly burned condition along with his own personal resistance. As a budding warm friendship begins to develop with his wonderfully caring nurse however, in time he begins to open up and recant about his life to her. Through a series of exceptionally filmed flashbacks we see in great detail how his harsh reality came to be. His pathetic demise was a result of an unrelenting love affair he had with a dazzling woman named Katharine Clifton played by Kristin Scott Thomas. Unfortunately, at that time Katharine was married to a colleague of Almasy's played by Colin Firth during an important desert expedition.
Why the Ending is Memorable?
This epically classic, passionate and forbidden love story between Almasy and Katharine unraveled gracefully upon layers of emotionally compelling, richly sensual, intriguing and suspenseful plot lines.
In addition, there are two key and endearing characters Hana the nurse, and Kip a disarming bomb specialist. They have their own romantic storyline that adds an interesting twist to the already captivating movie. Also, memorable features include innumerable awesomely filmed scenes in the desert, Italian villa, and other striking locations. The music soundtrack in this grand movie is finely tuned; matching every moment...precisely.
Towards the enthralling unwinding end...many emotions are strongly experienced such as: Anger, gut wrenching frustration, pity, empathy, sadness, compassion, and most noticeably an enormous amount of just sheer painful hopelessness.
Also, it is a bit shocking to realize that the first opening scene of the movie is in fact how this---- tragic love story truly begins to end...
Circumstantially, along with a great deal of turn of events-- Katharine Clifton most disturbingly dies. Almasy in keeping his promise for his beloved Katharine, and within his own set of unforeseen challenging circumstances, is subsequently horribly burned in a plane crash. Some time later when eminent death is approaching him, Almasy with his noble nurse dutifully by his side surrenders to complete culpability for all of the horrible consequences of his past actions, including inadvertently being the cause of the untimely death of the love of his life-Katharine. Under his doomed terms he decides when and how to die.
It is without question- an excruciatingly melancholy conclusion.
Yet each of these deaths are presented delicately, with exquisite attention given to the smallest of details under different and very moving emotional scenarios.
In effect this movie is Memorable because it is devastatingly Haunting----- in the most Beautiful, Thoughtful, Romantic manner Imaginable.
Final Movie...on a much Happier, Memorable Ending Note...
Cashback - 2006
Main Actors: Sean Biggerstaff, Emilia Fox
Director and Written by: Sean Ellis
Genre: Independent Romantic Comedy, Rated R
Synopsis: A struggling talented young Artist named Ben who has just recently broken up with his longtime girlfriend Suzy becomes a neurotic, insomniac. In order to cope with his problems he pursues working the graveyard shift at a supermarket as a clerk. He then unleashes the idea in his mind that he has ability to stop time or freeze time. During these frozen in time "moments"he sketches unsuspecting women inside the supermarket. This story is about learning or realizing some basic principles of Life and Love with some very colorful and quirky characters joining in on the journey along the way.
Why the Ending is Memorable?
Strictly from an Artistic Perspective and personally having had the wonderful experience of sketching nude models.... visually throughout the entirety of this movie, many scenes are memorable due to the stunningly, gorgeous, display of most of the female subjects or characters. Even at times where the story ventured into different segments sans the protagonist- beautiful women instead of being objectified solely by their aesthetic values the director masterfully does the opposite by empowering them in one way or other. It was easy to immerse completely into this movie's Original Storyline.
The writing is superbly intelligent, witted..and unwinds at a smooth transitional excellent pace. There are many laugh out loud funny moments, as all of the characters are hysterically engrossing. This movie in essence is an array of different types of artistic mediums all at once...Bravo!
In the beginning the main character Ben, is indeed overwhelmed by his sadness over the breakup as its rightfully painful..However, when Ben begins to work at the supermarket he surprisingly more so to himself-- develops a crush on one of his fellow co-workers. Her name is Sharon a shy, sweet, pretty clerk. With his rampant imagination combined with his newly found bizarre coping mechanism or belief that he can "somehow" freeze/ stop time, Ben eventually through much needed introspection, self acceptance and finally giving in to trusting or believing in someone else...we then have the added bonus to witness with much artistic finesse Following or Pursuing Your Dreams, and Love coming all to be... -Fantastically-.
This multi-talented British director and production staff had the ability to express and deliver many creative avenues as original storytelling, cinematography-photographic/effects, sketching, etc....brilliantly.
The ending...is simply---Whimsically Beautiful----- executed with the perfect soft underscore of a delicate piano playing followed by an open sound song which compliments and completes the feeling of Total Peace and Elation.
Poignant and Notable Narration Quote during Closing End Scene by main Character Ben:
"Love is there if you want it to be. You just have to see that its wrapped in Beauty and hidden away between the seconds of your Life...
If you don't stop for a minute...
You might miss it."

I followed Shamel here and he's right! Shawshank Redemption rocks though the English Patient is fine too!!!
I like your new photo :)...
I haven't seen any of those...I keep seeing bits of Shawshank but I want to read the book first...
OK. I am sorry, I skipped most of your hub. I have not seen these movies, and so want to, so....I will watch them THEN come back and read this to agree/disagree with you. Congrats on the hubnugget nominee from a little while ago about the baby bunnies!! When I was a kid, my baby sister used to always say..."That was a good movie. I liked the ending!"
I have never seen either the english patient or cashback but shawshank was awsome. Maybe I will check those other two out.
I see you're a romantic at heart. I'm not too fond of happy endings, myself. But Shawshank is an exception. Stephen King is my man, and the director, Darabont totally killed the adaptation. Still a shame he had no Oscar to show for it. You do know your chops in Cinematography, though. Well done.
You're welcome. I like happy endings when they're not too typical. Like for me, Lucky Number Slevin - that's a happy ending. Sin City, that's a happy ending. Casino - that's a happy ending. But these are not all typical happy endings. What I hate is when the boy and the girl hug and kiss in the end, or worse a movie that ends in a marriage! I would puke my guts out! No friggin' kidding! :)
Great options. I've planned to see 'redemption' over the weekend. Thx for this interesting hub.
Redemption is a great movie with a great, excellently timed ending. One of my favorites is the ending of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," although it is a sad ending.
I have not seen Cashback but going to get it...Loved the ohter two movies. Great recap, you did awesome.
I was passing by your hub RED and wanted to take a peek in here again :) Lovely and crafty hub.
The shawshank redemption and english patient are both good movies and I love the ending in both of them too. Haven't seen the other movie. Great hub!
I was watching the English Patient ending here! It reeks romance and sadness :( What to do with you??? What?
Beautifully written Sharing Insight. I'm a movie buff too. So many good ones, but you nailed it with Shawshank Redemption. Music really does play an important part in setting the scene and emotional tone. Great reviews to you and of the movies.
