Brown Wild Baby Bunnies and How to Handle them

They are so adorably, irresistible, and ever so soft.

These two cute, baby little, brown, perfect bunnies sure made our day last Spring...

I had been reading inside our home, when out of nowhere my husband shows up with this brown thingy in his hands. I blinked...and then screeched oh my god is that is that a lil baby bunny???????!!!!!!!

Cute cute cute cute did I say cute!!!! I gently grabbed the bunny and his heart rate was way up. I was concerned for the bunny straight away. Then I hear..."there is also another one in the front yard, I must of mowed their bunny hole with two babies inside!" What? We all ran out, but before we did we put Bunny #1 in a safe, deep box inside.

Sure enough, Brown bunny #2 was frantically hopping around the front yard. After a few minutes of trying to catch it we did!

Now we already own 1 dog and 1 cat and have 3 kids. All of us were thinking the same thing..."could we keep them?" I've had bunnies as pet's before when I was much younger, I enjoyed having my sweet lil white bunny, but I do remember it did take time and a lot of effort to take care of it. Especially if you have it lose and then at night put it back in its cage to sleep. You have to maintain the cleanliness of the cage regularly. I, nor the rest of my family could imagine adding an additional task to our lives presently. There is enough going on as is!

SO after much deliberation we all concluded as a family we would return back to the wild, the very next day...

After much research, i.e calling animal control and finding info on the internet..

Here's is what we learned on how to handle the situation:

Best Care for Baby Bunnies Before releasing them to the Wild is:

1)Take note of time of day, best times for bunnies to feed and be active is early, and possibly dusk. You want them to be able to see where they are, and get their bearings as soon as possible.

2)It will be tempting but Do Not Pet, or Handle them more than necessary. They are a wild animals afterall, you must keep in mind they are not used to human hands, touch or sounds.. You surely wouldn't want to see a bunny die. :(

3)Put the bunny in a box as soon as possible--- preferably with an old towel at the bottom of box. You can add leaves, flowers, even a bit small pieces of grass or bark. Keep them away from all outside, people noises. Again this noises and distractions will only agitate these somewhat fragile animals. We followed the advice of animal control and kept the ones we found in a hamper(with holes)it worked out very well.

4)Place bunny or bunnies in a box or hamper in a safe dark area. We chose our closet as its big, and we were able to keep the children away. Although a couple of times we snuck in and took pics. We just couldn't resist their cuteness..We were quick taking the pics though and super sshhh quuuuuiiiiet.

5)What to feed them? We learned a piece of fresh parsley does nicely. They eat daisies too. Also, include a shallow saucer of water in the box or hamper.

During the night I could hear the bunnies as I slept, because the bunnies were scampering about in their newly foster home hamper. That indeed was good sign that they were comfortable. It was very sweet, and I couldn't get over how adorable they were!

Morning time came, I checked the bunnies, they ate the parsley and drank the water..Also they left mini itty bitty bunny droppings(good sign they were fine).

Time to release bunnies: Early about 6:30am.

After saying our goodbyes...and much much oooing and ahhing these lil precious things we look out our window...

Wouldn't you know it? We spotted a big brown bunny hopping in front of our yard, and so we were even happier, and hoping that was it was mother bunny looking for her lost kids...who knows?

I took out the bunnies one at a time, and I kid you not, the minute the bunny saw its familiar green, wild bushy area to the side of our house, it jumped right in! So did bunny #2!

A very Happy ending after all...

Another cute tid bit---- These bunnies sought and found safe refuge in our home a few days before Easter.
